As the dust settles after the recent presidential debate, it’s time to discuss the future of American leadership. While President Biden has made some strides during his tenure, concerns about his ability to lead effectively are mounting. Additionally, the possibility of Donald Trump’s return presents a grave threat to the nation’s democratic foundations. Drawing parallels to the fall of great empires like Rome and the Mongols, it becomes clear that strong, capable leadership is essential to avoid a similar fate.
Why Biden Should Consider Stepping Aside
1. Age and Stamina
At over 80, President Biden’s age has become a focal point. The presidency demands energy and vitality, and it’s crucial for new leaders to step up and guide the nation forward. Just as aging leaders contributed to the decline of the Roman Empire, fresh leadership is vital for revitalizing the Democratic Party, a leader that returns to the principles that uplifted the working class and revitalized the economy. We cannot endure leaders whose vision is archaic and whose interests diverge from the base.
When it is your time to go, do it with grace!

2. Declining Approval Ratings
With fluctuating approval ratings due to economic concerns, his horrendous neglect to defend humanity in Gaza, and inflation, Biden’s vulnerability in the upcoming election is evident. The Democratic Party needs a candidate who can rally the base and face the challenges ahead with vigor. Biden cannot do that and he should not be required to.
3. Unity and Progress
Internal divisions within the Democratic Party call for a unifying figure. A new leader could energize younger voters and ensure continued progress on key issues, from climate change, the assault on Gaza, and income inequality to healthcare.
4. Legacy Preservation
Democrats believe Biden has achieved some policy victories. By stepping aside, he can solidify his legacy in the Democratic Party without the risks of a grueling campaign (one he clearly cannot handle), similar to leaders in history who passed the torch to preserve their legacies. Whatever will be his legacy, he should want it to be that he left on his own terms.
The Trump Threat
1. Assault on Democracy
Trump’s presidency was marked by attacks on democratic norms, echoing the authoritarian tendencies that contributed to the fall of empires. His refusal to accept the 2020 election results and the incitement of the January 6th which put numerous people in prison, highlight the dangers of his potential return.
2. Erosion of Trust in Elections
Trump’s baseless claims of voter fraud have severely undermined public trust in the electoral process. Trump did not lose because of voter fraud, he lost because his presidency was atrocious. This distrust poses a long-term threat to the foundation of American democracy, reminiscent of internal strife that weakened empires like the Mongols.
3. Increased Polarization
Trump’s divisive rhetoric has deepened societal divisions, hindering efforts to address critical issues such as racial inequality and healthcare. A return to his leadership could exacerbate these tensions, much like the internal divisions that led to the fall of Rome.
4. Unstable Foreign Policy
Trump’s erratic foreign policy alienated allies and isolated the U.S. on the global stage. Strong, stable leadership is needed to maintain international alliances and avoid the isolation that has doomed great empires in the past. While the US must change its foreign policy, and become what it projects itself to be, it cannot afford to be isolated at 5-8% of the world’s population. It cannot be the parents of the world if it is abusive to its children. We need to become a country that understands the rapidly changing geopolitics and adapts. We need to be humanists, not extortionists. Trump cannot create a world that unites because he does not understand the world or geopolitics. His decisions in the Middle East prove that he is too inept to rise to this occasion.
The Need for Real Leadership
In these trying times, America needs leaders who can navigate complex challenges and unite the nation. As history shows, the fall of great empires often stems from weak leadership and internal division. To avoid a similar fate, it’s crucial for the Democratic Party to present a candidate who embodies strength, unity, and progress. Biden has shown that his physical and mental challenges are far too vast to risk this election on him.
Conclusion
As we approach the 2024 election, the choices we make today will shape the nation’s future. President Biden stepping aside could usher in a new era of leadership, ensuring that the country remains strong and resilient. Meanwhile, the potential return of Trump threatens to unravel the democratic fabric of the United States. The time for decisive, effective leadership is now. Biden MUST step aside.
He has to go. I’ve had enough!
Our options are scare. We are seriously not left with any options. If Biden loses we have Trump. If he steps aside someone could step in and lose. I am so alarmed. They are saying Biden is refusing to drop out.
Do people feel better now that he decided to step aside. I hope this whole thing works out for everybody because I just think stepping aside in the middle of an election is a bad idea.
If Trump were to win the presidency are people going to be asking for Trump to step aside because he’s too old? I agree that Biden is old, but I do kind of think it’s unfair to act like he’s that much older than Trump. Why is he the only one that always has to answer for his age?
Biden is too old. He would not have won. People need to get real about what happened. Everybody saw mental decline. There’s no reason we need to keep pretending like we all didn’t see that. Something was wrong and it was obvious during that debate. He should’ve voluntarily decided to leave before it became a spectacle. I am not blaming him specifically for the outcome of this election, but let’s not act like he would’ve won. There’s no way he would have.
Even though Kamala lost, I still think that Biden was too old to continue running. It was obvious that he was suffering from some kind of decline, and I don’t think the Democrats were being honest about what was really going on with him. I think he should’ve stepped aside without making the Democrats have to force him out. But this election was a nightmare, and I really am trying to understand how we got to this place.
